The testosterone pellet is placed in the hip or buttock area. This is a quick and easy in-office procedure in which the patient’s insertion site is numbed and a small incision is made for pellet insertion. Once the pellets are inserted, the site will be covered with a small bandage. The person who has received the pellets can walk right after the procedure.
There is no fasting needed. The physician will order lab work prior to insertion to assess your current hormone levels in order to find the current dosing necessary for you. Since the bioidentical pellets are identical to the chemicals naturally produced in the body, they are completely dissolved and absorbed into the blood over time.
This is an in-office procedure with very minimal downtime or recovery. The week following the insertion, it is best to decrease lower body exercise, while walking is fine, extraneous activity is not recommended. Swimming, hot tubs and bathtubs should also be avoided during the first week, while showering is fine. As each patient’s response to hormone therapy is different, the timing of receiving pellets will depend on the condition of each individual. The average time frame for one testosterone pellet is 6 months, and the patient will need to return to the clinic to receive another insertion twice yearly.
