Testosterone therapy is an important part of the transition period for trans men. Testosterone therapy causes changes in four main areas, including physical adjustments, emotional state adjustments, sexual transformations, and reproductive system alterations. Testosterone therapy comes in several different forms including pill, injection, patch, gel, or pellet.
In our offices in Beachwood, Westlake, and Middlefield, we offer Bio Te Testosterone Pellets. Bio Te is a medical company that creates bioidentical hormones. These hormones are different from the synthetic hormones; they are chemically identical to the chemicals that are body produces naturally. The bioidentical hormones are made through plant-based hormones rather than being compounded from chemicals in a lab. Bio Te is generally safe and effective with minimal side effects.
Testosterone pellets are composed of bioidentical powdered testosterone that is fused into a small pellet that looks like a grain of rice. These are manufactured through a trusting and FDA-registered compound pharmacy that uses high-quality pellets with ingredients that are meticulously tested, giving our patients the confidence that they are receiving the best quality treatment. How is Testosterone Therapy Administered?
The testosterone pellet is placed in the hip or buttock area. This is a quick and easy in-office procedure in which the patient’s insertion site is numbed and a small incision is made for pellet insertion. Once the pellets are inserted, the site will be covered with a small bandage. The person who has received the pellets can walk right after the procedure.
There is no fasting needed. The physician will order lab work prior to insertion to assess your current hormone levels in order to find the current dosing necessary for you. Since the bioidentical pellets are identical to the chemicals naturally produced in the body, they are completely dissolved and absorbed into the blood over time.
This is an in-office procedure with very minimal downtime or recovery. The week following the insertion, it is best to decrease lower body exercise, while walking is fine, extraneous activity is not recommended. Swimming, hot tubs and bathtubs should also be avoided during the first week, while showering is fine. As each patient’s response to hormone therapy is different, the timing of receiving pellets will depend on the condition of each individual. The average time frame for one testosterone pellet is 6 months, and the patient will need to return to the clinic to receive another insertion twice yearly.
