What is a Labiaplasty Surgery?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess and/or uneven labial tissue from a woman’s labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) and/or the labia majora (the outer vaginal lips). Overtime, a woman’s labia minora may become enlarged or elongated, which is a condition known as labial hypertrophy. This may be caused from genetics, puberty or following childbirth. Similarly, a woman’s labia majora may also become enlarged, or appear saggy or uneven over time, which may be due to weight fluctuation, age, genetics or following childbirth.
Women may elect to have this procedure done to enhance their overall aesthetic and provide a more youthful look to their body. When women have an enlarged labia majora or minora, they may become uncomfortable due to the way this may cause them to look in tightly fitted clothing or bathing suits. Or, they may experience discomfort during exercise or intercourse. This procedure may also be performed for hygienic reasons including pinching or rubbing of underwear, or moisture collection in the genital area.
What is the Surgical Approach for a Labiaplasty?
After experimenting with many different styles of surgical techniques, Dr. Gitifooroz has concluded that the straight edge technique is the best approach for this surgery due to it’s precise precision with very few risks. The surgery may be performed using a CO2 laser or other modalities depending on the patient’s skin color and condition. Some modalities are minimally invasive and offers a more precise incision than the standard scalpel. The incision will run along the length of the labia, an accurately creates a new shape of the labia which is pre-determined by the physician and patient prior to surgery. At the end of surgery, the skin in sutured together to create the desired look, and the sutures used are self-dissolvable.
The CO2 laser provides superior precision and cutting while cauterizing the blood vessels as it cuts. This results in very minimal bleeding and scarring, and helps to decrease swelling, bruising, pain and post-operative recovery time. The surgery is performed in our ZEEBA outpatient surgery center in Beachwood, OH using the most modern and state of the art equipment.
